CALL FOR A MEMORIAL ARTWORK – U.S.A.
 | Deadline: January 4, 2013 A progressive, non-denominational congregation of Michigan, is commissioning an original artwork to serve as a memorial. This memorial will be used to display names of congregants, and/or their friends and family members who have died. The memorial will be installed in one of three potential sites located inside the church building. Submissions may be sculptural or two dimensional, but must be capable of incorporating names of deceased persons. The project is open to artists, architects or designers. The selection process will include an open round and a final round. The open round will be at the participant's own risk and expense. Finalists must be able to travel to Michigan to present and defend their design. Teams may submit collaborative works. Individuals may submit multiple proposals.
BUDGET: Up to three finalists will receive 1,000usd to prepare scale model proposal. One successful finalist will receive a contract not to exceed 10,000usd, which will include the cost of labor, materials, fabrication and delivery.
Submissions may be religious or secular in approach. Successful proposals will achieve these goals: It will be original, aesthetically pleasing, and complement its architectural surroundings. It will invite quiet meditation and reflection by individuals or small groups. It will be durable and easily maintained by building staff. It will provide spaces for inscribed name markers, such as: the final installed work must include space for at least 300 name markers and up to 25 inscribed name markers .Name markers must be large enough to accommodate 150 characters, excluding spaces. Name markers added after installation must be inscribed without involvement of the artist. A model or detailed rendering of the project and a display of materials will be used to raise funds for the project.
A note about safety: The completed memorial must be permanent, durable and safe. Each potential site has multiple uses. Submissions that require additional lighting, use technology, or major alterations to the site should clearly state this and include these estimated costs in the budget at the time of submission.
