BIENNIAL SYMPOSIUM STONE SCULPTURE – NEW ZEALAND

A local sculpture society called organizes the 2014 Biennial International Stone Sculpture Symposium. All the organising is done by members as volunteers. The ethos is that all artists on the symposium will cooperate in the daily running of the symposium.
The Symposium to be held on the Foreshore of a New Zealander City. Up to 25 New Zealand and overseas artists are selected to participate. The three weeks of sculpting attracts a wide public following and concludes with an open air exhibition and auction.
KEY SYMPOSIUM DATES: Sunday 29 December 2013 11am: Opening ceremony (all artists to attend), followed by a welcoming lunch, selection of stones and orientation. Monday 30 December 2013 – Friday 17 January 2014: Sculpting Friday 17 January 4pm Closing Ceremony (all artists to attend) followed by BBQ Sunday 19 January 2014 – Saturday 25 January: Exhibition week (up to two works per artist) Saturday 25 January 2014 2pm: Auction of works.
SYMPOSIUM DESCRIPTION: The Symposium site is an open air, grassed area near the sea alongside the Coastal Walkway close to the city centre. The timing is during the summer holiday season in New Zealand. Artists will work observed by members of the public and are required to work in a safe way. Accommodation and meals are provided free of charge for visiting artists. Artists are responsible for their own travel arrangements and costs. The raw stone supplied to the Symposium artists is a local hard stone of volcanic origin, in the form of large river boulders (approximately 1 metre in diameter). This stone is worked with granite tools. Each symposium work site is supplied with electricity, compressed air and water. Lifting equipment, artists’ rest area, tool storage facilities etc. are provided for general use. Artists are required to bring their own safety equipment. Note: the stone dust has high levels of silica. New Zealand artists need to supply their own tools, hoses and electrical cord. Basic electric angle grinders, hoses and cords are provided for international artists. Some specialist tools (such as drills and splitters) are provided for all artists. Please note that the artists are expected to do all the sculptural work themselves and a personal technical assistant is not supplied. Artists may exhibit up to two works completed at the symposium. A commission of 20% is payable on any sales. Unsold symposium works may be: transported at the artist’s expense or exhibited for sale at the Club site and webpage for up to one year. A registration fee of $150 /121usd/93eu applies for New Zealand artists and is payable upon selection to confirm your place.
